Yes, New Yorkers can buy Delta Dental on their own, no employer needed, and you can enroll online in about 10 minutes. You have three choices: PPO Basic (a $1,000 yearly maximum, preventive covered in full), PPO Premium (a $2,000 yearly maximum that also covers crowns, root canals, implants, and even orthodontics), and DeltaCare USA (fixed copays, no yearly maximum, no waiting periods, but you use an assigned network dentist). Delta's networks include roughly 3 out of 4 dentists in the country. The quote takes a ZIP code, a birthdate, and a start date. The price is the same as going direct, and enrolling through the link on this page puts a licensed broker (me) in your corner for free.

I'm Dick Tracy, an independent health insurance broker in Buffalo, licensed in 25 states with 80+ carriers behind me. I came out of the healthcare side of this business, so there is no gag clause on me. Dental is one of the few products I will happily let you buy without ever talking to me, because the plans are simple enough to compare on one page. So that is exactly what this page does. I educate, you decide.

Why your marketplace plan left your teeth behind

Here is the part nobody explains at enrollment time. Adult dental is not an "essential health benefit" under the Affordable Care Act. Medical plans do not have to include it, and in 2026 CMS finalized a rule that flat-out bars adult dental from being treated as an essential health benefit in marketplace plans. Worse, your premium tax credit (the subsidy) applies to your health plan premium, not to a stand-alone adult dental plan. So even people with heavily subsidized medical coverage are paying full freight at the dentist, or skipping the visit entirely. If you have ever looked at your marketplace plan and wondered where the dental went: it was never really there. Kids get pediatric dental protections. Adults get a shrug.

Dental is the care Americans skip first. In 2023, about 1 in 5 adults (21%) delayed or went without dental care because of cost. That is more than double the share who skipped medical care (8%), prescriptions (8%), or mental health care (7%). A dental plan you actually use flips that math. Your three Delta Dental choices in New York

Delta Dental sells three individual plans to New York residents. Two are PPOs (see any dentist, best pricing in network) and one is DeltaCare USA, a copay-style plan built around an assigned network dentist. Here is the honest side-by-side:

 PPO BasicPPO PremiumDeltaCare USA
Yearly maximum$1,000$2,000None. No cap.

Exact premiums depend on your age, ZIP code, and how many people you cover, which is why the quote tool asks for exactly those three things. You will see your real monthly price before you commit to anything.

The honest tradeoffs (read this before you pick)

I would be a lousy detective if I only showed you the shiny side. The PPO plans have waiting periods before basic and major services are covered, and a yearly maximum. If you need a crown next month, PPO Basic will not help you at all (it never covers major work) and PPO Premium makes you wait. DeltaCare USA covers major work immediately with no cap, which sounds like the obvious winner, until you remember the catch: you use an assigned DeltaCare general dentist. If you love the dentist your family has seen for 15 years, check whether they are in the DeltaCare network before you pick it, or stick with a PPO. Freedom versus predictability. Neither is wrong. The math just needs to match your mouth.

How to enroll (about 10 minutes, no phone call needed)

1. Click the red button. It opens Delta Dental's own quote page. My broker ID rides along automatically, so I become your broker on record.
2. Enter your ZIP code, birthdate, how many people you are covering, and when you want coverage to start.
3. Compare the plans and real prices for your ZIP code side by side.
4. Pick one and enroll. Done. Card comes from Delta Dental.

Straight talk about that link: the enrollment link on this page carries my broker ID. Your price is identical either way (rates are filed with New York State). The difference is that when a claim gets denied or an EOB makes no sense, you have someone to call who does this all day. Delta pays me a commission. You pay nothing extra. That is the whole arrangement.

Who each plan actually fits

PPO Basic: you want cleanings and checkups handled, your teeth are in good shape, and you want the lowest premium while keeping your own dentist.
PPO Premium: you know major work is somewhere on the horizon (a crown that has been "watched" for two years, a kid who needs braces) and you can wait out the waiting periods.
DeltaCare USA: you need work done sooner rather than later, you want zero surprises on price, and you are flexible about which dentist you see. No yearly cap matters more than dentist choice for you.
And if you are on Medicare: Original Medicare does not cover routine dental, and I write Medicare Supplements, which do not either. A stand-alone dental plan like these is exactly how Medigap folks in New York plug that hole.

Common questions about Delta Dental in New York

Can I buy a Delta Dental plan on my own in New York?

Yes. Delta Dental sells individual and family plans directly to New York residents, no employer needed. Three choices: PPO Basic ($1,000 yearly max, preventive covered in full), PPO Premium ($2,000 yearly max, covers major work and orthodontics), and DeltaCare USA (fixed copays, no yearly maximum, no waiting periods, assigned network dentist). Enrollment takes about 10 minutes online.

Why doesn't my marketplace health plan cover my dental work?

Adult dental is not an essential health benefit under the ACA, so medical plans do not have to include it, and a 2026 CMS final rule barred adult dental from being treated as one in marketplace plans. Your premium tax credit also does not apply to a stand-alone adult dental plan. That is why people with subsidized medical coverage still pay cash at the dentist.

What is the difference between Delta Dental PPO and DeltaCare USA?

The PPO lets you see any dentist but has deductibles, a yearly maximum, and waiting periods on basic and major work. DeltaCare USA has fixed copays, no deductible, no yearly maximum, and no waiting periods, but you use an assigned network general dentist. Freedom versus predictability.

Do Delta Dental plans have waiting periods in New York?

The PPOs cover preventive care immediately but make you wait on basic and major services. DeltaCare USA has no waiting periods at all, including major work, which is why people who need a crown soon often land there if they are comfortable with an assigned dentist.

Does it cost more to enroll through a broker's link?

No. Rates are filed with New York State and are identical either way. Enrolling through my link records me as your broker, so you get a licensed human in your corner when a claim gets weird. Delta pays me. You do not.
